As a hard-working husband, proud father, and loving grandfather, I have been pushing back on the stereotypical norms of my age group for almost 20 years. In 2001 I was brand new to the idea of weight training, healthy eating and cardiovascular training, but it made sense and I dove into it full force.
At age 47 I committed to a 12 week comprehensive program and completely transformed my body, losing 14 pounds of fat and gaining almost 20 pounds of muscle.Other people training in the same gym took notice, and within a 2 week period I had sold my publishing business, got my personal training certification at the Cooper Institute, and began helping them achieve their goals.
Chances are you and I have a few things in common. We’re starting to get “up there” in age, but we believe age isn’t the limiting factor. It’s our habits that reinforce the undisciplined decline into old age.If you’re like me, you’re not going to let that happen. We both know nothing great happens in our “comfort’ zones. I’m here to tell you it’s not too late to reinvent yourself, regardless of your age or current fitness level.
If you’re still strong in your mind, and have the will to make things happen, I can help you become the best version of YOU, Body, Mind and Spirit.
As a Wife , Mom of 3 amazing daughters, lifelong Georgetown Resident, lover of food and hater of cardio; I am happy to be the newest member of the Get Age Fit Team!
I discovered strength training in my 30s. and was instantly in love. It made me feel strong, it gave me energy, I embraced the idea of eating good food to fuel my body instead of starving myself in hopes of shrinking my pant size. It didn’t take long for my strength training investment to pay off. Despite minimal cardio and ample food, my body changed. And as my body changed, my mind was forever changed. I knew all those years ago that this was my passion and eventually I would figure out a way to live that passion.
Despite that passion, I have often struggled with finding balance in the pursuit of a healthier lifestyle. Balancing a demanding career and a busy family, I struggled with making the time , putting myself first and getting distracted along the way by the latest fad diet or quick fix. It wasn’t till I went back to the basic principles I had learned in my 30s that I again was able to see changes.
So what are those basic principles that work every time? A decision to change. A decision to put yourself first. A sustainable plan. Consistency and daily effort. And an acceptance that change doesn’t happen overnight. You have to get your mind right and then just trust the process we lay out. You will be amazed by the changes that come and how physically and mentally strong you will feel.
In addition to training clients as a Certified Fitness Professional, I also help to manage the operations of the Get Age Fit studios. After many years of working all over the US and abroad during my career in IT, my wife and I opened an English Style Horse Riding facility in Georgetown, which we operated for over 12 years.
As a competitive rider and trainer, I used the same principles of technique and position that are so necessary for safe and effective resistance training. Watching my clients develop and grow as they accomplish their goals is especially gratifying for me.
“My husband Michael and I have been personally coached by Theo Thurston for 18 months, so we have experienced many of his training techniques and incorporate them into the training sessions we have with our clients.
"I love the opportunity to train and work with my personal training clients, at our studios, who are committed to improving their health and lifestyle. Being able to coach people as we have been coached, and seeing them transform their bodies and lives, is so rewarding!
I have been training with weights since I was 15 years old, but became serious and made it a part of my life in my mid-30’s and 40’s. I am now 61 years old, and through weight training, cardio and balanced nutrition, I keep my body fat between 6% and 8% year round.
y favorite mentor is Bill Phillips creator of Body For Life. I highly recommend reading that book before starting your training.. it is scientifically sound, and incorporates many of the techniques I use with my clients.
